STEMS2 Mini-Internship

Annually, 15 highly qualified STEM majors (freshmen and sophomores preferred) will be selected to participate in our mini-internship program. The internship will be offered between the end of the spring semester and the start of the summer session. The internship is partitioned into two main segments. Part of the internship will be dedicated to faculty-developed “seminars in higher-level STEM content,” which is essentially a precursor to the kind of content participants will encounter as upperclassmen. These seminars will include 15 contact hours. The second part of the internships will give participants an opportunity to work with high potential middle school students. STEM majors with a 3.0 GPA who have completed freshmen year courses are preferred. All interested STEM majors should apply online at will typically begin reviewing applications in the latter part of the Spring Semester. Applications will be accepted until all 15 slots are filled.

STEM Content Enrichment

  • For mathematics majors, the content will cover essentials for a jump start in Calculus II (MATH 301), Fundamentals of Mathematics (MATH 360), or mathematics course as needed.
  • For biology majors, the content will include enrichment topics designed to position participants for initial success in Genetics (BIOL 233) or Anatomy & Physiology (BIOL 220, or Research in Biology.
  • Content Enrichment might also include seminars in Pedagogical Content Knowledge.

AME CAMP Overview

Participants will work with Master Teachers in the Advancing Mathematical Excellence AME Camp for no less than 5 days and a minimum of three hours per day. AME focuses on creative, engaging, student-centered activities that seek to inspire budding STEM innovators from among its participants.

The camp is limited to high performing students from selected schools entering grades 8 and 9. Camp theme features an integration of math & science topics with “Survivor” themed activities.

*Participants will receive a $1000 stipend for their internship experience
